While they are not different universes, they are several plains of existence packed into one universe. The Dark Dimension, as it is known as, is one of those many distant realms in the universe. It is ruled by the demonic tyrant Dormammu, who, if unleashed from hellish realm, would destroy all.
On Midgard, Doctor Stephen Strange, a professional surgeon, is driving home one late night, when it begins storming. Little does he know, Baron Mordo, the Sorcerer Supreme, is casting a rain spell to cover up a huge magic battle. Mordo finally manages to destroy the evil demon, but as the storm he created rages on, Stephen Strange crashes his car off a bridge, and washes up on shore.
