Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) is now into his early 20s and is a photographer for the Daily Bugle. His rival at work is an older colleague, Eddie Brock (Liam Hemsworth ). When Peter comes across a new black suit, he begins to wear it and starts to develop a harsh and dark attitude, which results in relationship problems between him and Gwen (Emma Stone). Unbeknownst to Peter is that the suit is actually possessed by an alien symbiote that is taking over his body.
Meanwhile, Norman Osborn (Chris Cooper) is undergoing experiments inspired by the works of Dr. Curt Connors while wheelchair-bound in attempts to cure himself of his unidentified terminal illness. He creates a formula that he nicknames "OZ," but after taking it he subsequently transforms into a mutated, goblin-like creature, calling himself the Green Goblin.
The Goblin attacks various locations throughout the city, eventually leading to a fierce battle between he and Spider-Man in which he claws out Spider-Man's left eye. As Spider-Man lies unconscious, the black suit oozes away from Peter's body, and Norman finds out Spider-Man's identity, but decides to let him live so he can cause more damage to him.
The Goblin kidnaps Gwen and takes her to the Queensboro Bridge, where he drops her. As Spider-Man, now dressed in his classic red-and-blue suit, tries to save her, his web attaches itself to her neck and the impact forces it to break, instantly killing her. Spider-Man, enraged, brutally attacks the Goblin and has his own glider impale him. In his final moments, Peter manages to unmask Goblin as Norman apologizes for what he's done. Peter does not accept the apology and allows Norman to die unforgiven.
In an alleyway, Peter throws his suit into the trash and walks away. Meanwhile, Eddie Brock is an another alleyway as the black suit begins to bond itself with him. Harry Osborn opens up his father's lab in Oscorp to reveal all of his Goblin equipment.
